Here's your brown things in nature fact of the day. Cattails are a common site in wet areas. They have many uses. Many parts of the plant are edible, the leaves are great to use for weaving, and during World War II, the United States Navy used the fluffy down in the seed heads in life vests and aviation jackets. Tests showed that even after 100 hours of submersion, the buoyancy was still effective. I once told a group of kids that muskrats eat cattails and use them to build their homes. I saw one kid's eyes get VERY wide and I had to explain that cattails are a plant and his kitty cat has no reason to fear muskrats! #brown #plants #cattails #natureclub
