Here is your vernal pool fact of the day. Most wetland types are defined by the dominant plant species found there. For example; swamps are mostly full of trees and marshes are dominated by cattails. Vernal pools are designated as such by the presence of certain indicator species who will breed no where else. The presence of wood frogs, certain salamanders and fairy shrimp in a temporary pool means that it is indeed a true vernal pool. Throughout the week, I will be focusing on the indicator species of vernalpools. #vernalpools #natureclub
