Here's a fact of the day about a white flower that I see blooming now when my walks take me into a wooded area. Mayapples have leaves that look like little green umbrellas. If there is only one "umbrella", there will not be a flower. If the stem branches into a "Y" with two "umbrellas", the flower will be located at the spot where it branches out. The flower will become a ping pong ball-sized fruit after pollination. All parts of this plant are poisonous, EXCEPT the fruit, but ONLY when it is ripe. Even then, it can be toxic if eaten in large quantities. Box turtles are fond of these fruits. The seeds are more likely to germinate after going through the turtles' digestive systems. #blackandwhiteweek #blackwhitegray #flowers #mayapple #boxturtles
