Sorry my posts have been later than usual. I'm busy training new people for the summer and then it will be summer camp season so the later time will be a thing for a while. So for today, A is for anhinga. Anhingas are bizarre water birds who do a great Loch Ness Monster impersonation as they submerge to hunt. Oddly, they don't have nostrils and must breathe out of their epiglottis. Unlike ducks, ospreys and pelicans which coat their feathers with oil from a special gland, the anhinga does NOT have waterproof feathers! Their feathers get soaked upon immersion in water. Their dense bones, wetted plumage and neutral buoyancy in water are what allow them to fully submerge and search for underwater prey. #aisfor #anhinga #birds #natureclub
