This week I will be featuring yellow things in nature. I saw my first yellow trout lily in bloom just yesterday on my hike. The name trout lily refers to the mottled leaves which have spots on them like a trout. They are also called dogtooth violets because there is a part of their roots that resembles a dog's tooth, but they are lilies, not violets. Interestingly they are planted by ants. Their seeds have a tasty coating that the ants enjoy. They take them to their underground nests and discard the uneaten part of the seed in their trash chamber where it will be protected until it is ready to sprout. #yellow #natureclub #flowers #troutlily #ants
